‘MY MAMALAH’ TO BE PERFORMED AT AUSCHWITZ/BIRKENAU ON JULY 2

Rockland County, NY based composer/lyricist Michael V. Ficocelli will have his song “My Mamalah,” performed at a Memorial Program honoring the memory of victims of the Holocaust at Auschwitz/Birkenau, Poland on July 2nd, 2009.  ‘My Mamalah’ is part of a larger choral work entitled ‘From Death To Hope’ originally commissioned by Temple Sharey Tefilo Israel, South Orange, NJ. From Death To Hope, was later produced by the Center for Holocaust Studies at Ramapo College and performed at the Sharp Theatre at Ramapo College, Mahwah, NJ. Both performances were directed by Marci Elyn Schein.

Ficocelli has expressed, “I’m deeply honored by this performance.  The song reveals a mother’s thoughts (an internal dialogue with her child) as she waits in line for the cleansing room. The song will be sung in Yiddish with Eastern European accompaniment.  Marci and I will be present to experience this very meaningful moment.”

They won over hundreds of applicants worldwide and were the only USA writing team to be presented at the festival.

"The highlight of the night is Building a Wing, the story of what happened to Icarus before he flew into the sun. Written by Americans Amanda Yesnowitz and Michael Ficocelli, it is an assured, well constructed and musically excellent piece. It is also the most complete of the shows, making the most of the ten minute structure. Under the direction of Neil Gooding, it features fabulous performances from Nick Christo as Icarus and Paul Whiteley as Daedalus and is worth the price of admission alone."--STAGENOISE with Diana Simmonds
